What is the essence of Tournevie?

Tournevie defies market logic. Our project shows a glimpse of the way in which markets, the state, commons and households all contribute towards a balanced and resilient economy.

While Tournevie is a commons, it relies on the market to provide high quality tools, it strengthens the 'household economy's' abilities to sustain itself, while it seeks close collaboration with the state.

Clearly, we propose a clear-cut alternative to a lop-sided economy that espouses growth, competition and the maxim of profit maximization. We seek to bring this alternative into the mainstream.

Where do we want to go?

Tournevie is not an original idea. It has existed since time immemorial, and it was inspired by similar initiatives elsewhere in the world (and, notably, !).

We want to expand the concept in Brussels, a city of around 1,2 million people. Every neighbourhood should have access to a tool library. Nobody should be tempted to buy disposable, low-quality tools.

We advocate the right to repair. Tools should be repairable and have a long lifespan. Replacement parts should be available. We aim to build a movement that puts pressure on producers to make this possible.

Want to help us expand?

The more tool libraries pop up, the greater our influence on people's mindsets (on sharing and repairing), on communities (and its social cohesion) and producers (including the design of their products).

We seek to open up new Tournevie antennas elsewhere in Brussels. We work with municipalities, citizens and civil society alike. We partner up with frontrunner companies to change the market.

if you have a dedicated space or workshop, a group of committed people, funding or other forms of help to make tool sharing the new normal in Brussels.
