A commons project
What is a commons, and why are we a commons project?
What are commons?
According to Wikipedia, the commons can be understood as natural resources that groups of people (communities, user groups) manage for individual and collective benefit.
Importantly, it's also a social practice of governing a resource not by state or market but by a community of users that self-governs the resource through institutions that it creates.
This community and the people in it act as stewards in order to preserve its resources for as long as possible (ideally forever), and they do this in an equitable way.
Why is Tournevie a commons project?
Tournevie acts as the steward of a set of resources that were transformed into a range of tools for repair, renovation and creation. It intermediates between this pool of tools, and the community of users.
Moreover, Tournevie is an open commons. Any member interested in co-managing the organisation, is welcome to join and share their knowledge, talents and efforts.
Tournevie is not driven by the market, nor organized within a state institution. Rather, it is fueled by efforts of citizens who self-organize economic activity outside the market.
